David Firth and Martha Shaw, were probably not married at All Hallows Cathedral nor even at Almondbury. Considering that they were known to both be living at a place called “Sellars Clough” near Marsden in 1820, they were probably married at the chapelry in Marsden. [3, 5]

Notes

LDS Ancestral File submissions commonly list Martha Wood as the wife of David Firth. However, Martha Wood’s husband lived in Clayton, Yorkshire and was married in Bradford. Martha Shaw was married in the Parish of Almondbury, the records being kept in the same parish as the David Firth who lived in Marsden and who was christened at All Hollows Cathedral, Almondbury. Moreover, Martha Shaw and David Firth (of Marsden) married in 1820 which coincides with the birth of their eldest daughter, Maria. David Firth (of Clayton) and Martha Wood married a decade earlier. [2, 9, 10]
“Sellars Clough” is probably a reference to the modern “Cellars Clough”, an area along the Huddersfield Narrow Canal just to the northeast of Marsden along the A62 near Sparth Reservoir. This is the location of the Cellars Clough Mill, a woolen mill that opened in the late 19th century and was owned by brothers Samuel and Copper Firth. [1, 6]
