  • Notes
    • Sources [England-1841d] and [England-1861d] list different locations for Hannah Toothil’s birth—Cheshire for the former and Bury in Lancashire for the latter. The latter is more likely because the 1861 Census of England and Wales recorded the actual county and town of an individual’s birth rather than just affirming that a person was, or was not, born in the county being enumerated as was done in the 1841 census. [3, 4]
    • A granddaughter, “Mary”, is enumerated in the household of Immanuel and Hannah (Toothil) Chadwick during the 1861 Census of England and Wales. The custom of the time was to enumerate an individual in whatever house they slept in the night the census was taken. Consequently, Mary may have been living with her grandparents, or she may have been simply been visiting her grandparents on the evening of 7 Apr 1861. Regardless, this is probably the daughter of Samuel Chadwick, Immanuel and Hannah’s only son. [4]
