  • Notes
    • According to [Fairbanks-1978] Joseph Hardy was living in Hadfield, Derbyshire, England at the time of his marriage to Mary Firth. Hadfield is now considered part of Greater Manchester. [1, 2]
    • [Fairbanks-1978] mentions that Joseph Hardy died after 1911 in East Boston, but this is contradicted by by Joseph Hardy’s death certificate which lists him as living at a private residence at 30 Jenkins Street in Boston. [NEHGS-1903a] also notes that Joseph Hardy’s usual residence was Lowell, Massachusetts. [2, 9]
    • Joseph Hardy’s death certificate lists his age as “83 years, 2 months, 12 days”. This produces a calculated birthdate of 19 July 1820. [1, 9]
    • A second set of 1870 census entries may exist for Joseph Hardy and his second wife, Mary (Firth-Chadwick) Hardy. On 11 Aug 1870, a Joseph and Mary Hardy, both born in England and having correct approximate ages, were enumerated in Ward 5, Lawrence, Essex County, Massachusetts. It appears that they may have been visiting Joseph’s son (by a previous marriage) and daughter-in-law. Joseph and Mary had already been enumerated in June in Pembroke, Merrimack County, New Hampshire, the location of the China Mill where Joseph worked with his son-in-law, Samuel Lowe. [5, 10]
    • During the enumeration of the 1900 US Federal Census, Joseph Hardy is listed as a servant in the household of Mary A. Pendleton in Boston. [6]
