  • Notes 
    • [US-1880-1t1] is very difficult to read, and the family surname is particularly difficult. However August, Caroline, and Maria appear on lines 48, 49, and 50 respectively. [2]
    • The reason for Maria’s presence in her father’s home during the enumeration of the 1880 US Federal Census is not known. But if she is the mother of the Bertha Stelow, the grand-daughter who also appears in that enumeration, then it is likely that her husband passed away since: 1) Maria is not listed as “Maria Stelow” and 2) Maria was the only daughter of marriageable age in the mid-1870s. Louisa, the next eldest daughter, is known not to have married until 1882. [2, 6]
    • Most of the children in this family used the name “Koepsel” rather than “Koebsel”. Consequently this database uses the former for Anna and Maria, the daughters who are, so far, only referenced through the US Federal Census records. [1]
    • [US-1870-1l] has the name “Mary” rather than Maria and a slightly different age for this individual. But it seems unlikely that August and Caroline Koebsel had both a daughter named Mary and a daughter name Maria becasue, for that to be the case, Maria would have had to leave home and marry prior to 1870, at the age of 16, and there is no evidence to suppor such a conclusion. [1, 4]
    • [US-1860-1m] has the first name “Marie”. [3]
