Most available sources disagree on James McCarney’s birth year. The Eighth Census of the United States for Burnsville, Dakota Co, Minnesota lists an approx. birth year of 1820. _Birth and Death Record for Meeker County, Minnesota_ lists James’ birth year as 1930. The 1870 US Federal Census for Harvey Township, Meeker County, Minnesota, however, lists the same approx. birth year as James’ grave site. [7, 8, 9]
In [US-1900-1q], James McCarney lists himself as widowed, and as expected Margaret (McGinley) McCarney is missing from the census record. However, Meeker County birth and death records record that Margaret did not die until November of that year. [3, 14]
An niece, “Anna O’Keefe”, is enumerated in James McCarney’s household in 1900. However, no O’Keefe niece by that name has been discovered yet. This woman may be the older sister of a niece, “Julia” enumerated with James’ son Patrick in the same census record. [3]
In [US-1900-1q] the surnames of James M McCarney and two his sons, Patrick W, and James, were all mistakenly entered as “Carney”. [3]
