    Military Edward Gross Tutein enlisted 1st Regiment, Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry at Chelsea, Massachusetts on 22 May 1861. He fought at Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville where he was severely wounded. He achieved the rank of 1st Lieutenant during his first tour of duty. At the end of that tour, Edward Gross Tutein re-enlisted as a Captain in the 61st Massachusetts Regiment that fought with General Grant in Virginia and that was present at Lee’s surrender at Appomattox.  [4

    • It is odd that the 1850 Federal Census for MA lists Edward as having been born in New Hampshire, like his elder brother Frederick, when a birth record for Chelsea, Massachusetts exists. [15]
    • [Tutein-1997a] incorrectly states that Edward Gross Tutein died on 16 Jul 1905. [2]
    • Sources [LDS-IGI-1982g] and [NEHGS-1905a] are in agreement regarding the date of Edward Gross Tutein’s birth. [15, 16]
