Generations:      Standard    |    Compact    |    Vertical    |    Text    |    Register    |    Tables

Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Allen Chadwick was born before 4 Jul 1819 in Newton, Cheshire, England, United Kingdom; died before 16 Aug 1860 in Stalybridge, Cheshire, England, United Kingdom; was buried on 16 Aug 1860 in Dukinfield, Cheshire, England, United Kingdom.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Occupation: Cotton Spinner
    • Residence: Jul 1819, Cockerhill, Stalybridge, Cheshire, England, United Kingdom
    • Baptism: 4 Jul 1819, Stalybridge, Cheshire, England, United Kingdom
    • Census: 30 Mar 1851, Stalybridge, Dukinfield Parish, ED of St. John, Cheshire, England, United Kingdom
    • Residence: 30 Mar 1851, No. 8 Grasscroft Road, Stalybridge, Cheshire, England, United Kingdom

    Notes:

It is not clear if the reference to “Newton, Cheshire” for Allan Chadwick’s birthplace refers to the modern town of “Newton Wood” which lies between Dukinfield (to the north) and Hyde (to the south) along the river Tame or to the town of Newton near Chester. The former is much more likely because of its proximity to Glossop, where Allan Chadwick married Mary Firth, to Stalybridge where he lived until his death, and to Mottram in Longdendale where most of his elder siblings were christened.

According to Robert Stanley Fairbanks in Fairbanks-1978], Allen Chadwick lived in Bridge End, Derbyshire, England at the time of his marriage to Mary Firth, but contemporary geographic records do not list a Bridge End (or even the more common “Bridgend”) in Derbyshire.

The notations for source [England-1851a]’s at Ancestry.com list Lancashire as the county, but the Chadwick residence appears to have been on Grasscroft Road in Stalybridge, part of Cheshire. This is consistent other sources that place Allan Chadwick in, or around, Stalybridge at the time of his death.

[LDS-VRI-1860a] actually lists Allen Chadwick’s place of burial as, “St. John, Dukinfield, Cheshire, England”. However it is not clear if this refers to St. John’s Church in Dukinfield, the parish church completed in the 1840’s or to the historical Ecclesiastical District of St. John. Further research is required. Although there is no question that the Allen Chadwick referred to in [LDS-VRI-1860a] is really the husband of Mary (Firth) Chadwick. First the burial records refers to “Leech St.” (in nearby Stalybridge) as location of the Allen’s death, the same street that Mary (Firth) Chadwick and her children were listed as living on in the next English census. Second, the age at death aligns with all known information about Allen.

Allen married Mary Firth on 11 Dec 1842 in Glossop, Parish of Glossop, Derbyshire, England, United Kingdom. Mary (daughter of David Firth and Martha Shaw) was born on 18 Oct 1822 in Marsden, Yorkshire, England, United Kingdom; died before 1903 in _______, _______, _______, United States. • Census: 9 Jun 1880, Pembroke, Merrimack County, New Hampshire, United States

    Notes:

Martha Chadwick is not enumerated in the household of her father and mother in the 1851 English census. Rather she is enumerated in the household of maternal grandparents, David Firth and Martha (Shaw) Firth. It was the common practice at the time in England to enumerate people in whatever house they slept in on the night the census was taken.

Martha Chadwick, along with her sister and mother, are enumerated in her grandfather’s household in 1861 UK census.

In the 1880 US census, Martha (Chadwick) Mossfull is enumerated in household of her mother and step-father, Mary (Firth) Hardy and Joseph Hardy.

Family/Spouse: Henry Mossfull. Henry was born about 1843 in _______, _______, England, United Kingdom; died in ? in (unknown). [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

At the time of the 1900, 1920, and 1930 US Federal Census, Maria (Chadwick) Lowe was living with her son-in-law, Robert Fairbanks and daughter Hannah Elizabeth (Lowe) Fairbanks.

Maria Chadwick, along with her sister and mother, are enumerated in her grandfather’s household in 1861 UK census.

Maria (Chadwick) Lowe was living in a boarding house run by a ‘Thomas Grisdale’ in 1870. William Lowe, Maria’s brother-in-law, was also living in the same boarding house in East Boson.

Maria (Chadwick) Lowe, along with her daughters Hannah Elizabeth (“Lizzie”) and Emily, and accompanied by her brother-in-law William, returned from a sea voyage to England on 13 Sep 1890 aboard the Cephalonia.

[US-1900-1c] confirms 1869 as the year that Maria (Chadwick) Lowe and her family emigrated from England to the United States.

In the 1870 US Federal Census, Maria (Chadwick) Lowe was enumerated under the name “Law”.

[LDS-VRI-1847c] lists 9 Jun 1846 as the date of Maria Chadwick’s birth. This conflicts with 9 Oct 1846 listed in [Fairbanks-1978].

    • Census: 22 Apr 1930, Precinct 2, Melrose City, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States

    Notes:

Despite all family evidence to the contrary, it appears that Hannah Elizabeth Lowe may have been christened “Elizabeth Lowe,” and was known by that name at various points in her life. First, [US-1880-1q] and [US-1870-2d2] list Hannah as “Elizabeth A. Lowe”. Second, on 4 Apr 1869, an Elizabeth Lowe, the daughter of Samuel and Mary Lowe, was christened at St. Mary’s Church, Manchester, Lancashire, England. Third, Hannah Elizabeth Lowe is listed twice, first as “Elizabeth H” and then again as “Lizzie” in the birth entry for her eldest son, Samuel.

Hannah Elizabeth Lowe and Robert Fairbanks appear to have been living with her parents at the time of the 1900 US Federal Census.

[US-1910-1m] indicates that Hannah Elizabeth Lowe may have emigrated to the United States in 1880 rather than 1869, as listed in [Fairbanks-1978].

    Notes:

Samuel Lowe III was born at 5 Water Street in Lowell, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. [Fairbanks-1978] has birth at Pembroke, Merrimack County, New Hampshire but this appears to be incorrect. It is likely, though, that the family of Samuel’s parents, Samuel and Maria (Chadwick) Lowe, were living in Pembroke at that time since they appear there in both the 1870 and 1880 US Federal Census records. Samuel may have been born while the family was traveling in Massachusetts.

Millard Maurice Frohock II’s selective service registration for World War I states that he was attending “Illinois University”. Although it is not known to what university this refers. He was also living with his parents in St. Louis, Missouri at that time.

Millard Maurice Frohock II was living with his grandparents Millard Maurice Frohock I and Sada Francis (Atkinson) Frohock at the time of the enumeration of the 1910 US Federal Census.

Social-security number is based on a single matching SSDI record for a “Millard Frohock,” born 7 Aug 1900.

[Chenoweth-2005] lists death date as “Oct 1960”.

Millard Maurice Frohock II was living in the household of his aunt and uncle, Oriana (Frohock) Walker and Eugene H. Walker, at the time of the enumeration of the 1920 US Federal Census.
