Notes:

[Fairbanks-1949] claims that John Fairbanks was killed in the Boer War while serving with the British Military. However this conflicts with [QDoJaAG-1938a] and [QSA-1888a].

Although a memorial exists at Helidon General Cemetery, source [QDoJaAG-1938a] seems to indicate that John Edward Fairbanks is not actually buried there but instead is buried in Toowoomba Cemetery. It is not clear if this is a reference to Drayton and Toowoomba Cemetery or another in the area.

[QDoJaAG-1891b], the birth entry for John Edward Fairbanks’ daughter Myra, lists four living children: Euphemia (age 7), Ethel (age 6), Lillian (age 4), and James Richard (age 2). With the exception of Ethel, for whom no birth record has yet been found, these correspond roughly to the children that were known to have been alive in 1891. The record also states that there were no deceased children of John Edward and Elizabeth (Lush) Fairbanks. Consequently, Euphemia must be the eldest child who emigrated from the United Kingdom under the name “Eliza”, and Lillian is probably the second or third eldest who emigrated under the name “Mary J”. Being so close in age to Euphemia, Ethel remains unresolved.

John Edward Fairbanks, his wife Eliza, and two daughters, Eliza and Mary J, departed from London, England on their way to Australia in 1888. [QSA-1888a] also notes that their origin was Warwick, but that the family were all listed as being Irish.

However every other available record from the birth records of all her Australian born siblings to the death records of both her parents record this woman’s name as “Euphemia”—which appears to the name she used throughout her life.

Source [QDoJaAG-1971a] indicates that Euphemia Fairbanks was single at the time of her death, but it does not say if she had ever been married.

With only a single exception, [QDoJaAG-1891a] the birth record of the eldest Australian born child of John Edward Fairbanks and Elizabeth (Lush) Fairbanks, Ethel Fairbanks is mentioned in every birth record of her younger siblings. But since Ethel Fairbanks does not appear on the passenger manifest of the Taroba, she may be adopted or a child informally raised by the Fairbanks family as their own. She also appears to have passed away prior to her father’s death in 1938. Coincidentally, an “Ethel Fairbanks” of the same age is listed in the 1901 Irish Census for County Sligo. This Ethel is living with Euphemia (Thomson) Fairbanks and is listed as a niece.

Glenmore does not exist as a town in the modern district of Toowoomba, but the family of John Edward and Elizabeth (Lush) Fairbanks was probably living in, or around, the Jondaryan settlement in 1889. In December 1891, when James Richard Fairbanks’ birth was registered at Brisbane, John Edward Fairbanks listed himself as living at Koojarawon near Highfields.

Source [QDoJaAG-1955a] indicates that James Richard Fairbanks was not married at the time of his death, but it is not known if he had been married previously.
