    Notes:

[NHBoVR-1936a] notes that Charles E. Eastman had been a resident of Hampton, Rockingham County, New Hampshire up until one week before his death. This source also notes the location of Charles’ death as “12 Walnut Street” in Exeter which happens to be the address in 1930 of Annie (Eastman) Manwaring and her husband Silas. Therefore, it’s likely that Charles passed away at the home of his younger sister, Annie.

Charles E. Eastman was living in the household of his brother-in-law and younger sister, Silas S. and Annie (Eastman) Manwaring, in 1910. In 1920, he appears to be living alone in Kensington, Rockingham County, New Hampshire and is enumerated in the US Federal Census for that year on the same page as his nephew, Frederick Warren Eastman. He is listed as ‘widowed’ in both census records.

Charles E Eastman marriage to Mary L Gardner was his first.

    Notes:

Emily Ann Eastman appears twice in “Wellfleet Births, Marriages, Deaths 1843 - 1859, Volume 2”. First on page 37, entry 41 with a birthdate of 16 Feb 1853. Second on page 41, entry 119 with a birthdate of 16 Feb 1854. Since it is highly unlikely that a second child with the same name was born exactly one year later, this database assumes that this is simply an entry mistake. Moreover, no death record has yet been found for an older daughter named Emily Ann Eastman.

John A. and Emily Ann (Eastman) Nelson were living with Emily’s parents, Warren and Rachel Young (Cole) Eastman at the time of the enumeration of 1870 US Federal census. However, both Emily and John are listed as single, and John is listed as a “boarder” in the Eastman home in Chelsea. It may be the case that the census information was gathered before the date of John and Emily’s marriage in May of that year.

Emily “Emma” Ann Eastman used her maiden name and listed herself as “single” in the 1880 US Federal census. In addition, her 10 year old son, John Albert Nelson, is listed in the same household as a “boarder”. Therefore it’s likely that Emily’s marriage to the elder John A Nelson in May of 1870 was simply to provide legitimacy to their son’s birth, and they did not live as husband and wife thereafter.

There is an Eastman family rumor that a daughter of Warren and Rachel Young (Cole) Eastman was living in California at the time of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and was not heard from again afterwards. Given that [NHBoVR-1898a2] indicates that John Albert Nelson Jr.’s mother was living in California at the time of his 2nd marriage and that no other Eastman children were ever recorded as living in California, Emily “Emma” Ann Eastman may have been that lost daughter.

    Notes:

Eliza Ann Eastman is not referenced in any sources after the enumeration of the 1870 US Federal census. Likewise, Ida A Eastman, is not referenced in any sources before her marriage to Walter C Harvey in 1876. Furthermore, [Tutein-1978] lists 8 children of Warren and Rachel Young (Cole) Eastman who lived to adulthood, and Eliza is not among them. Consequently, since Tutein descendants only knew Eliza by the nickname that she used throughout her adult life, “Ida”, and since Ida (Eastman-Harvey) Pettigrew was known to have been born in Aug of 1858, Ida and Eliza must be the same individual.

[NHBoVR-1942a] indicates that, until 3 days before her death, Eliza (“Ida”) Anne (Eastman-Harvey) Pettigrew was a resident of Portsmouth, Rockingham County, New Hampshire, and that Eliza’s death was reported by her son from her first marriage, Arthur S. Harvey.

Eliza “Ida” Ann (Eastman-Harvey) Pettigrew and her husband John were living in the household of Ida’s younger son by her first marriage at the time of the enumeration of the 1920 US Federal Census.
