Duplicate christening records exist for Immanuel Chadwick, each from Cheshire parish records. The first lists his given name as “Immanuel”, which is consistent with the name used in his marriage intention record. The second uses the name “Emanuel” (probably “Emmanuel”), which is consistent with the name as it appears on the christening records of his children. [2, 7]
It is not clear if the reference to “Newton, Cheshire” for Immanuel Chadwick’s birthplace refers to the modern town of “Newton Wood” which lies between Dukinfield (to the north) and Hyde (to the south) along the river Tame or to the town of Newton near Chester. The former is much more likely because of its proximity to Stalybridge where Immanuel Chadwick and his family lived at least through the 1860’s and to Mottram in Longendale, the historic parish where Immanuel was christened. A granddaughter, “Mary”, is enumerated in the household of Immanuel and Hannah (Toothil) Chadwick during the 1861 Census of England and Wales. The custom of the time was to enumerate an individual in whatever house they slept in the night the census was taken. Consequently, Mary may have been living with her grandparents, or she may have been simply been visiting her grandparents on the evening of 7 Apr 1861. Regardless, this is probably the daughter of Samuel Chadwick, Immanuel and Hannah’s only son. [5]
