[US-1900-1k] notes that Catherine (Schaefer) Hoffman was the mother of 12 children of which 10 were still alive in 1900. Since only 5 are enumerated in 1880 and an additional 4 in 1900, there must be 3 children (1 living, 2 deceased in 1900) that are not accounted for in this database. [4, 5]
There is considerable confusion regarding this individual’s name. Bonnell family sources use the name “Anna Katherine Schaeffer”. However a first name of “Anna” is only supported by a single post marriage census record. In all pre-marriage census records, as well as in [WHS-1872a], a variant of “Catherine”, without Anna, is used. In the birth records of her children, she is sometimes listed as “Elsie” or “Mary”. [2, 3, 9, 10]
Catherine Schaefer was a domestic servant in the household of Almond and Augusta Osborn during the enumeration of the 1870 US Federal Census. [6]
