    • Residence: Apr 1930, Fond du Lac, Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin, United States
    • Census: 5 Apr 1930, Fond du Lac City, Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin, United States

    Notes:

[FondduLac-1930] lists the place of Delia (Scheff) Jarvis’ birth as “Russell Point, New York.” However, considering that the USGS has no such listing, and that “Rouses Point,” close to Champlain, Clinton County, where the family of Peter Sheff was known to be living in 1850, it is likely that Delia’s obituary is simply incorrect.

Almost all Rauls family records, including most sources in Fond du Lac refer to “Delia Scheff.” Prior to 1870 though, most records have the name “Cornelia,” which may have been Delia’s name at birth.

Delia Scheff’s obituary makes reference to 17 children born to her and Abraham Jarvis, and also the fact that her family had been Fond du Lac since 1855.

[Tetzlaff-2002] has a death date of 27 September 1930 and Delia’s birth on 16 July 1846 at New York City, New York, but these all conflict with Delia’s obituary, [FondduLac-1930].

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Also Known As: Matthias Raulz
    • Occupation: Farmer
    • Emigration: 1856
    • Census: 10 Sep 1860, Town of Berry, Dane County, Wisconsin, United States
    • Census: 8 Jul 1870, Town of Berry, Dane County, Wisconsin, United States
    • Census: 22 Jun 1880, Town of Berry, Dane County, Wisconsin, United States
    • Census: 2 Jun 1900, Cross Plains Township, Dane County, Wisconsin, United States

    Notes:

[US-1870-1f] has Mathias’ name as “Matthias Raulz,” a common spelling for that surname.

In [LDS-VRI-1876a], Mathias Rauls lists his parents as John (probably Johann) and Mary Rauls.

In [US-1900-2b], Matthias Rauls lists his birthdate as May 1818.

It is a common misconception in the Bonnell family that the Peter Rauls (and family), listed in [US-1860-1l] just below Mathias Rauls, is actually his son. To the contrary, Peter, son of Mathias and Elizabeth Meyer, was born in 1842 and still listed in his father’s household in 1860.

[US-1900-2b] lists Mathias and Magdalena Rauls as having been married for 46 years in 1900. If this is, in fact, the case, then the parentage of 4 of 9 of the children of Mathias and Elizabeth Meyer would be called into question. Moreover, since Mathias is enumerated in US Federal Census’ up through 1870 in the same household as Elizabeth, the notation in [US-1900-2b] seems likely to be an error on the part of the census taker or the reporter.

Mathias + Elizabeth Meyer. Elizabeth was born about 1819 in _______, _______, Kingdom of Prussia; died before 1875 in _______, _______, Wisconsin, United States. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  5. 13.  Elizabeth Meyer was born about 1819 in _______, _______, Kingdom of Prussia; died before 1875 in _______, _______, Wisconsin, United States.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Emigration: 1856
    • Census: 10 Sep 1860, Town of Berry, Dane County, Wisconsin, United States
    • Census: 8 Jul 1870, Town of Berry, Dane County, Wisconsin, United States

    Notes:

The emigration date of 1856 for Elizabeth is inferred from the fact that she and Matthias were already married (with 4 children) at the time of their emigration from Prussia.

Elizabeth Meyer probably died around or before 1875 since, by 1880, Mathias is remarried with two young children ages 4 and 3.

  6. 14.  Michael Friedrich August Köpsel was born on 1 Dec 1823 in Dannenberg, Wollin Parish, Pomerania, Kingdom of Prussia (son of Michael Friedrich Köpsel and Anna Maria Budahn); died on 27 Mar 1898 in Theresa, Dodge County, Wisconsin, United States; was buried after 27 Mar 1898 in Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery, Dodge County, Wisconsin, United States.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Also Known As: August Koebsel
    • Baptism: 7 Dec 1823, Dannenberg, Wollin Parish, Pomerania, Kingdom of Prussia
    • Emigration: Bef 23 Jul 1847, Stettin, Pomerania, Kingdom of Prussia
    • Immigration: 23 Jul 1847, New York City, New York, United States
    • Naturalization: 21 Nov 1855, _______, Dodge County, Wisconsin, United States
    • Census: 7 Jun 1860, Town of Theresa, Dodge County, Wisconsin, United States
    • Census: 16 Jul 1870, Theresa, Dodge County, Wisconsin, United States
    • Census: 17 Jun 1880, Town of Theresa, Dodge County, Wisconsin, United States

    Notes:

Determining the actual date of Michael Friedrich August Köpsel’s emigration to the United States is very difficult. The only other Köpsel (Koepsel or Koebsel) family to travel from Germany to the US in the 1840’s was the family of Carl Koebsel, and that family did have a son August, but he was only 17 years of age in 1846 when they emigrated. Moreover, [US-INS-1855a] indicates that our ‘August Köpsel’ traveled in 1847 rather than 1846. Consequently, the author believes that Michael Friedrich August Köpsel did indeed emigrate in 1847 and on the same ship as his future wife, Carolina Dorothea Ulrica (“Emily”) Budahn. His entry in the ship’s manifest seems to appear on the last line of the second page

Most Wisconsin land abstracts and deeds show this individual’s last name as “Koebsel”, and he is also listed this way on his headstone. The name “Koepsel” (sometimes “Koepsell”) seems be have been adopted by his children and is almost certainly the anglicized version of “Köpsel”.

“Dannenberg” is a historic name for the modern Polish village of Domysłów on the island of Wolin (Polish spelling) at the edge of the Baltic Sea.

[Rauls-1998] has death year as 1894, but this appears to be incorrect.

[US-1880-1t1] is very difficult to read, and the family surname is particularly difficult. However August, Caroline, and Maria appear on lines 48, 49, and 50 respectively.

The surname as listed in [US-1870-1l] appears to read “Kebsey” or “Koebsey”, but transcription errors were very common in US Federal Census records of that era. Regardless, there is no doubt that this record does refer to August Köpsel and his family. The children match almost exactly with known individuals obtained from family records.
