Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Anna Koepsel was born about 1876 in _______, _______, Wisconsin, United States (daughter of Michael Friedrich August Köpsel and Carolina Dorothea Ulrica Budahn); died in ? in (unknown).

    Notes:

Most of the children in this family used the name “Koepsel” rather than “Koebsel”. Consequently this database uses the former for Anna and Maria, the daughters who are only referenced through the US Federal Census records.

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Michael Friedrich August Köpsel was born on 1 Dec 1823 in Dannenberg, Wollin Parish, Pomerania, Kingdom of Prussia (son of Michael Friedrich Köpsel and Anna Maria Budahn); died on 27 Mar 1898 in Theresa, Dodge County, Wisconsin, United States; was buried after 27 Mar 1898 in Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery, Dodge County, Wisconsin, United States.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Also Known As: August Koebsel
    • Baptism: 7 Dec 1823, Dannenberg, Wollin Parish, Pomerania, Kingdom of Prussia
    • Emigration: Bef 23 Jul 1847, Stettin, Pomerania, Kingdom of Prussia
    • Immigration: 23 Jul 1847, New York City, New York, United States
    • Naturalization: 21 Nov 1855, _______, Dodge County, Wisconsin, United States
    • Census: 7 Jun 1860, Town of Theresa, Dodge County, Wisconsin, United States
    • Census: 16 Jul 1870, Theresa, Dodge County, Wisconsin, United States
    • Census: 17 Jun 1880, Town of Theresa, Dodge County, Wisconsin, United States

    Notes:

Determining the actual date of Michael Friedrich August Köpsel’s emigration to the United States is very difficult. The only other Köpsel (Koepsel or Koebsel) family to travel from Germany to the US in the 1840’s was the family of Carl Koebsel, and that family did have a son August, but he was only 17 years of age in 1846 when they emigrated. Moreover, [US-INS-1855a] indicates that our ‘August Köpsel’ traveled in 1847 rather than 1846. Consequently, the author believes that Michael Friedrich August Köpsel did indeed emigrate in 1847 and on the same ship as his future wife, Carolina Dorothea Ulrica (“Emily”) Budahn. His entry in the ship’s manifest seems to appear on the last line of the second page

Most Wisconsin land abstracts and deeds show this individual’s last name as “Koebsel”, and he is also listed this way on his headstone. The name “Koepsel” (sometimes “Koepsell”) seems be have been adopted by his children and is almost certainly the anglicized version of “Köpsel”.

“Dannenberg” is a historic name for the modern Polish village of Domysłów on the island of Wolin (Polish spelling) at the edge of the Baltic Sea.

[Rauls-1998] has death year as 1894, but this appears to be incorrect.

[US-1880-1t1] is very difficult to read, and the family surname is particularly difficult. However August, Caroline, and Maria appear on lines 48, 49, and 50 respectively.

The surname as listed in [US-1870-1l] appears to read “Kebsey” or “Koebsey”, but transcription errors were very common in US Federal Census records of that era. Regardless, there is no doubt that this record does refer to August Köpsel and his family. The children match almost exactly with known individuals obtained from family records.

Michael married Carolina Dorothea Ulrica Budahn about 1851. Carolina (daughter of Christian Heinrich Budahn and Anna Maria Schulz) was born on 9 Jun 1834 in Dannenberg, Wollin Parish, Pomerania, Kingdom of Prussia; died on 18 Oct 1908 in Kenosha, Kenosha County, Wisconsin, United States; was buried on 20 Oct 1908 in (unknown). • Census: 17 Jun 1880, Town of Theresa, Dodge County, Wisconsin, United States

    Notes:

Handwritten notes of Mary Adelaide Rauls notes state, “died at age 67,” but the 1850 US Federal Census for Dodge County Caroline’s age as 16.

[US-1880-1t1] is very difficult to read, and the family surname is particularly difficult. However August, Caroline, and Maria appear on lines 48, 49, and 50 respectively.

Generation: 3

  1. 4.  Michael Friedrich Köpsel was born about 1793 in (unknown); died on 30 Dec 1829 in Dannenberg, Wollin Parish, Pomerania, Kingdom of Prussia; was buried on 4 Jan 1930 in (unknown).

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Residence: Dec 1823, Dannenberg, Wollin Parish, Pomerania, Kingdom of Prussia

    Notes:

The listed parish of Michael Friedrich Köpsel’s death is “Neu Colzow”. Colzow was apparently a subdivision of Wollin Parish.

Michael Friedrich Köpsel’s father may have been named “Christian Heinrich”.

Michael married Anna Maria Budahn on 19 Oct 1820 in Dannenberg, Wollin Parish, Pomerania, Kingdom of Prussia. Anna (daughter of Johann Budahn and Maria Fromholzen) was born in ? in Dannenberg, Wollin Parish, Swedish Pomerania; died in ? in (unknown). [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 5.  Anna Maria Budahn was born in ? in Dannenberg, Wollin Parish, Swedish Pomerania (daughter of Johann Budahn and Maria Fromholzen); died in ? in (unknown).

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Residence: Dec 1823, Dannenberg, Wollin Parish, Pomerania, Kingdom of Prussia

    Notes:

Anna Maria’s surname which is almost impossible to read in [Greifswald-1823a] and [Greifswald-1820b], is quite clearly “Budahns” in [Greifswald-1821a], but since she appears to be a daughter of Johann Budahn and Maria Fromholzen, her surname is listed as “Budahn” in alignment with her other bothers and sisters.

Given that Anna Maria Budahn married in 1820, she is probably the second or third eldest of Johann Budahn and Maria Fromholzen’s children.

Although [Greifswald-1820b] does not list Anna Maria Budahn’s place of birth, it does state that she was “of Dannenberg”. Since there is no indication that Anna Maria ever lived elsewhere, and all her siblings were born in Dannenberg, it is safe to assume that she was also born in Dannenberg.

    Children:
    1. Wilhelm Heinrich Carl Friedrich Köpsel was born on 31 Jul 1821 in Dannenberg, Wollin Parish, Pomerania, Kingdom of Prussia; died in ? in (unknown).
    2. 2. Michael Friedrich August Köpsel was born on 1 Dec 1823 in Dannenberg, Wollin Parish, Pomerania, Kingdom of Prussia; died on 27 Mar 1898 in Theresa, Dodge County, Wisconsin, United States; was buried after 27 Mar 1898 in Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery, Dodge County, Wisconsin, United States.

  3. 6.  Christian Heinrich Budahn was born on 11 Nov 1793 in Dannenberg, Wollin Parish, Swedish Pomerania (son of Johann Budahn and Maria Fromholzen); died on 27 Oct 1879 in Theresa, Dodge County, Wisconsin, United States; was buried after 27 Oct 1879 in Hochheim Cemetery, Dodge County, Wisconsin, United States.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Also Known As: Heinrich Budahn
    • Occupation: Miller, Farmer
    • Emigration: Bef 23 Jul 1847, Stettin, Pomerania, Kingdom of Prussia
    • Immigration: 23 Jul 1847, New York City, New York, United States
    • Census: 24 Jul 1850, Town of Theresa, Dodge County, Wisconsin, United States
    • Census: 7 Jun 1860, Town of Theresa, Dodge County, Wisconsin, United States
    • Census: 20 Jul 1870, Theresa, Dodge County, Wisconsin, United States

    Notes:

[Mueller-1999] and [Heian-2010] have “Heinrich Budahn’s” birth listed as “Donnerberg, Usedom-Wollin, Prussia” and “Stettin, Pomerania, Prussia” respectively. However, neither of these locations is supported by any vital records uncovered thus far. Moreover, the only contemporary reference for a “Donnerberg” is probably an historic village near Aachen in Nordhein-Wesfalen, a considerable distance from Gristow where Christian Heinrich Budahn and Anna Maria Schulz were married. On the other hand, [Greifswald-1820a] states that Christian Heinrich Budahn was “...of Dannenberg”, a village on the island of Wollin at the edge of the Baltic Sea. The modern location is the Polish village of Domysłów, Wolin. [Greifswald-1820a] is not conclusive evidence that Christian Heinrich Budahn was born in Dannenberg, but it is much more likely than locations supplied by other sources.

Christian Heinrich Budahn’s surname is sometimes spelled “Budhan”. In fact this is the spelling used in [Greifswald-1820a] and [US-NARA-2003a1]. However, both before and after Heinrich’s emigration to the United States, the spelling “Budahn” appears more often in vital record and census sources. In addition “Budahn” is the more common spelling in the region of Pomerania where Heinrich lived.

The 1850 US Federal Census for Dodge County, Wisconsin lists Heinrich’s surname as “Boden”.

[Heian-2010] has Christian Heinrich Budahn’s burial in Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery, but this is contradicted by interment records available in [Hocheim-2011].

    Notes:

[Heian-2010] has Anna Maria Schulz’ birth at Schokken, Posen, Prussia, but this is contradicted by [Miller-1999]..

Age for Anna Maria is confirmed by the 1850 US Federal Census for Dodge County, Wisconsin.

[Heian-2010] has Anna Maria (Schulz) Budahn’s burial in Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery, but this is contradicted by interment records available in [Hocheim,2011].
