    Notes:

In addition to his position at the Atlantic Works, Samuel was a machinist at T. A. Harrison’s Mill, Stalybridge, England and a Master Mechanic at the China Mill in Suncook, New Hampshire. It was the China Mill that sponsored the emigration of Samuel Lowe and his family to the United States.

Despite the usage in Fairbanks-1978], there is no indication that Samuel Lowe referred to himself with the suffix “Jr.”

The naturalization date and location listed in [Fairbanks-1978], “13 Oct 1882, Boston, Suffolk County” conflict with the US DoJ, INS records in source [US-INS-1880a]. Since the latter is the actual naturalization record from the US government, it is used in this database.

[US-1900-1c] confirms 1869 as the year that Samuel Lowe and his family emigrated from England to the United States.

[Fairbanks-1979] has death occurring in East Boston, Merrimack County, Massachusetts, but this conflicts with Samuel Lowe’s death certificate.

Samuel Lowe was admitted to Boston City Hospital (the old city hospital in Boston’s South End) on 4 February 1905 and died there the next day.

In the 1870 US Federal Census, Samuel Lowe was enumerated under the name “Law”.

    Notes:

At the time of the 1900, 1920, and 1930 US Federal Census, Maria (Chadwick) Lowe was living with her son-in-law, Robert Fairbanks and daughter Hannah Elizabeth (Lowe) Fairbanks.

Maria Chadwick, along with her sister and mother, are enumerated in her grandfather’s household in 1861 UK census.

Maria (Chadwick) Lowe was living in a boarding house run by a ‘Thomas Grisdale’ in 1870. William Lowe, Maria’s brother-in-law, was also living in the same boarding house in East Boson.

Maria (Chadwick) Lowe, along with her daughters Hannah Elizabeth (“Lizzie”) and Emily, and accompanied by her brother-in-law William, returned from a sea voyage to England on 13 Sep 1890 aboard the Cephalonia.

[US-1900-1c] confirms 1869 as the year that Maria (Chadwick) Lowe and her family emigrated from England to the United States.

In the 1870 US Federal Census, Maria (Chadwick) Lowe was enumerated under the name “Law”.

[LDS-VRI-1847c] lists 9 Jun 1846 as the date of Maria Chadwick’s birth. This conflicts with 9 Oct 1846 listed in [Fairbanks-1978].

As his children, Elizabeth and Albert, are both listed as having been born in “Stalybridge, Lancashire” rather than “Stalybridge, Cheshire,” the family must have moved to the north side of the River Tame before 1859.

    • Residence: 30 Mar 1851, No. 8 Grasscroft Road, Stalybridge, Cheshire, England, United Kingdom

    Notes:

It is not clear if the reference to “Newton, Cheshire” for Allan Chadwick’s birthplace refers to the modern town of “Newton Wood” which lies between Dukinfield (to the north) and Hyde (to the south) along the river Tame or to the town of Newton near Chester. The former is much more likely because of its proximity to Glossop, where Allan Chadwick married Mary Firth, to Stalybridge where he lived until his death, and to Mottram in Longdendale where most of his elder siblings were christened.

According to Robert Stanley Fairbanks in Fairbanks-1978], Allen Chadwick lived in Bridge End, Derbyshire, England at the time of his marriage to Mary Firth, but contemporary geographic records do not list a Bridge End (or even the more common “Bridgend”) in Derbyshire.

The notations for source [England-1851a]’s at Ancestry.com list Lancashire as the county, but the Chadwick residence appears to have been on Grasscroft Road in Stalybridge, part of Cheshire. This is consistent other sources that place Allan Chadwick in, or around, Stalybridge at the time of his death.

[LDS-VRI-1860a] actually lists Allen Chadwick’s place of burial as, “St. John, Dukinfield, Cheshire, England”. However it is not clear if this refers to St. John’s Church in Dukinfield, the parish church completed in the 1840’s or to the historical Ecclesiastical District of St. John. Further research is required. Although there is no question that the Allen Chadwick referred to in [LDS-VRI-1860a] is really the husband of Mary (Firth) Chadwick. First the burial records refers to “Leech St.” (in nearby Stalybridge) as location of the Allen’s death, the same street that Mary (Firth) Chadwick and her children were listed as living on in the next English census. Second, the age at death aligns with all known information about Allen.

Allen married Mary Firth on 11 Dec 1842 in Glossop, Parish of Glossop, Derbyshire, England, United Kingdom. Mary (daughter of David Firth and Martha Shaw) was born on 18 Oct 1822 in Marsden, Yorkshire, England, United Kingdom; died before 1903 in _______, _______, _______, United States. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  4. 7.  Mary FirthMary Firth was born on 18 Oct 1822 in Marsden, Yorkshire, England, United Kingdom (daughter of David Firth and Martha Shaw); died before 1903 in _______, _______, _______, United States.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Residence: Nov 1822, Sellars Clough, Marsden, Yorkshire, England, United Kingdom
    • Baptism: 10 Nov 1822, Chapelry of Marsden, Yorkshire, England, United Kingdom
    • Census: 6 Jun 1841, District 24, Dukinfield, Stockport, Cheshire, England, United Kingdom
    • Residence: Mar 1851, Stalybridge, Cheshire, England, United Kingdom

    • Census: 13 Jun 1870, Town of Pembroke, Merrimack County, New Hampshire, United States
    • Census: 9 Jun 1880, Pembroke, Merrimack County, New Hampshire, United States

    Notes:

According to [Fairbanks-1978], Mary Firth lived in Bridge End, Derbyshire, England at the time of her marriage to Allen Chadwick, but contemporary geographic records do not list a Bridge End (or even the more common “Bridgend”) in Derbyshire.

Mary (Firth) Chadwick and her 2 daughters are enumerated in her father’s household in 1861 UK census, and she is listed as widowed.

“Sellars Clough” is probably a reference to the modern “Cellars Clough”, an area along the Huddersfield Narrow Canal just to the northeast of Marsden along the A62 near Sparth Reservoir. This is the location of the Cellars Clough Mill, a woolen mill that opened in the late 19th century and was owned by brothers Samuel and Copper Firth.

A second set of census entries may exist for Mary (Firth-Chadwick) Hardy and her husband Joseph Hardy. On 11 Aug 1870, a Joseph and Mary Hardy, both born in England and having correct approximate ages, were enumerated in Ward 5, Lawrence, Essex County, Massachusetts. It appears that they may have been visiting Joseph Hardy’s son (by a previous marriage) and daughter-in-law. Mary and Joseph had already been enumerated in June in Pembroke, Merrimack County, New Hampshire, the location of the China Mill where Joseph worked with Mary’s son Samuel Lowe.

    • Census: 2 Apr 1871, Stockport, Stockport Civil Parish, Cheshire, England, United Kingdom

    Notes:

John Morley’s surname was listed as “Mawley” in [England-1841c].

An additional child, “Samuel Royle”, age 10, is enumerated in the household of John and Hannah Morley in 1841. In 1851, a “William Royle”, age 20, is listed as a “lodger” in the Morley household.

A second 1841 english census return exists for the family of another John and Hannah Morley of Dukinfield, Stockport, Cheshire. However, it has been determined that this is not the family of our Ann Morley because this record lists her as having been born somewhere other than County Chester (‘Cheshire’). Whereas it is known that Ann was, in fact, born in Cheshire--a fact confirmed by numerous sources including [England-1851c].

Sources [England-1841c] and [England-1851d1] disagree on John Morley’s age and estimated birthdate. The former has him born about 1801. The latter in 1797.

    [England-1851d1] b. abt 1807 at Northwich, Cheshire
    [England-1861c]: b. abt 1806 at Derby, Derbyshire
    [England-1871b]: b. abt 1808 at Crewe, Cheshire

This database uses the information from [England-1861c] since this would make Hannah the likely mother of her eldest son (about 20 years old rather than 15) and since [England-1841c] states that Hannah was born a county other than Cheshire (e.g., Derbyshire).

“Morley” is Hannah’s married name. Her maiden name is not known.

    Notes:

LDS Ancestral File submissions often connect this David Firth with the family of William Firth and Mary Lofthouse of Clayton, Yorkshire, but this is often based on source [WYAS-1792a] which has a christening date in mid-1792. Most evidence, though, indicates that our David Firth was instead the son of David Firth of Marsden, Yorkshire. First, this individual is unquestionably the father of Mary (Firth) Chadwick, as she is enumerated in his household in 1861, one year after the death of her husband, Allen Chadwick. This individual consistently listed his birthplace as “Marsden” in all English census records from 1841 through 1861. Duplicate christening records exist, both in Marsden and in Almondbury, for “...David son of David Firth. And finally, this individual was married to Martha Shaw in 1820 approximately 9 months before the birth of their eldest daughter, Maria. This fact is recorded in parish records that were originally held at All Hallows Cathedral, Almondbury, Yorkshire. David Firth of Clayton was married to Martha Wood fully 10 years earlier.

The birth dates of David and Martha (Shaw) Firth and their four daughters were listed on a sampler embroidered by their daughter, Mary. Robert Stanley Fairbanks noted this fact and the dates in [Fairbanks-1978]. However, by the time of Ruth Edna (Tutein) Fairbanks’ death, that sampler had been lost. It has not been discovered in the years since.

The age listed for David Firth in both the 1851 and 1861 English census returns is consistent with [Fairbanks-1978]

[England-1861a] has David Firth’s residence on “Leach Street”. The contemporary name for this is “Leech Street”, and Page 1 of that same source, lists the name correctly. The misspelling appears to be a census taker’s mistake.

  8. 15.  Martha Shaw was born on 24 Apr 1793 in Marsden, Yorkshire, England, Great Britain; died in ? in (unknown).

    • Residence: Apr 1861, Stalybridge, Cheshire, England, United Kingdom
    • Census: 7 Apr 1861, Stalybridge, Dukinfield Parish, ED of St. John, Cheshire, England, United Kingdom

    Notes:

LDS Ancestral File submissions commonly list Martha Wood as the wife of David Firth. However, Martha Wood’s husband lived in Clayton, Yorkshire and was married in Bradford. Martha Shaw was married in the Parish of Almondbury, the records being kept in the same parish as the David Firth who lived in Marsden and who was christened at All Hollows Cathedral, Almondbury. Moreover, Martha Shaw and David Firth (of Marsden) married in 1820 which coincides with the birth of their eldest daughter, Maria. David Firth (of Clayton) and Martha Wood married a decade earlier.

    Notes:

David Firth and Martha Shaw, were probably not married at All Hallows Cathedral nor even at Almondbury. Considering that they were known to both be living at a place called “Sellars Clough” near Marsden in 1820, they were probably married at the chapelry in Marsden.
