  1. 6.  James M McCarney was born in 1826 in _______, County Donegal, Province of Ulster, Ireland, United Kingdom (son of Patrick McCarney and Catherine Brady); died on 14 Nov 1902 in Harvey Township, Meeker County, Minnesota, United States; was buried after 14 Nov 1902 in Our Lady of Manannah Cemetery, Manannah, Meeker County, Minnesota, United States.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Military: James McCarney enlisted in Company M, Minnesota 1st Cavalry Regiment (referred to in source [Alden-1888] as the “First Minnesota Mounted Rangers”) on 2 Dec 1862. He served as a private in that company from 24 Dec 1862 to 16 Aug 1863.
    • Occupation: Farmer
    • Emigration: 1 Mar 1846, _______, _______, Ireland, United Kingdom
    • Immigration: 7 May 1846, New Orleans, Orleans Parish, Louisiana, United States
    • Census: 26 Sep 1850, Town of Benton, Lafayette County, Wisconsin, United States
    • Census: 3 Aug 1860, Township of Burnsville, Dakota County, Minnesota, United States
    • Census: 19 Aug 1870, Township of Harvey, Meeker County, Minnesota, United States
    • Census: 4 May 1875, Town of Harvey Meeker County, Minnesota, United States
    • Census: 8 Jun 1880, Harvey, Meeker County, Minnesota, United States
    • Census: 12 Jun 1900, Harvey Township, Meeker County, Minnesota, United States

    Notes:

Most available sources disagree on James McCarney’s birth year. The Eighth Census of the United States for Burnsville, Dakota Co, Minnesota lists an approx. birth year of 1820. _Birth and Death Record for Meeker County, Minnesota_ lists James’ birth year as 1930. The 1870 US Federal Census for Harvey Township, Meeker County, Minnesota, however, lists the same approx. birth year as James’ grave site.

In [US-1900-1q], James McCarney lists himself as widowed, and as expected Margaret (McGinley) McCarney is missing from the census record. However, Meeker County birth and death records record that Margaret did not die until November of that year.

An niece, “Anna O’Keefe”, is enumerated in James McCarney’s household in 1900. However, no O’Keefe niece by that name has been discovered yet. This woman may be the older sister of a niece, “Julia” enumerated with James’ son Patrick in the same census record.

In [US-1900-1q] the surnames of James M McCarney and two his sons, Patrick W, and James, were all mistakenly entered as “Carney”.

James married Margaret McGinley in May 1850 in Galena, Jo Davies County, Illinois, United States. 2. 7.  Margaret McGinley was born in 1828 in _______, _______, Ireland, United Kingdom (daughter of Daniel McGinley and Margaret Logan); died on 13 Nov 1900 in Harvey Township, Meeker County, Minnesota, United States; was buried after 13 Nov 1900 in Our Lady of Manannah Cemetery, Manannah, Meeker County, Minnesota, United States.

    • Also Known As: Margery McGinley

    • Emigration: 1 Mar 1846, (unknown)
    • Census: 26 Sep 1850, Town of Benton, Lafayette County, Wisconsin, United States
    • Census: 1851, Raphoe North, County Donegal, Province of Ulster, Ireland, United Kingdom
    • Census: 3 Aug 1860, Township of Burnsville, Dakota County, Minnesota, United States
    • Census: 19 Aug 1870, Township of Harvey, Meeker County, Minnesota, United States
    • Census: 4 May 1875, Town of Harvey Meeker County, Minnesota, United States
    • Census: 8 Jun 1880, Harvey, Meeker County, Minnesota, United States

    Notes:

The _Birth and Death Record for Meeker County, Minnesota_ lists the parents of Margarie McGinley as “Daniel” and “Margaret Logan”. I have assumed that Daniel’s last name was McGinley since Margarie is often referred to by that surname, but there is no conclusive proof of this usage.

The 1841/1851 Irish Census Abstracts had numerous references to persons that had died or that had emigrated by the time the census was recorded. If Margaret McGinley was recorded by her family in 1851, after her emigration to America, the discrepancy regarding her age can be explained. However, more research is required.

[Alden-1888] lists “McGinlay” as Margaret’s surname.

    Notes:

Patrick McCarney was living with his younger brother John in Clogher, County Tyrone at the time of his death in 1850. Since Catherine is not mentioned in the 1851 Northern Ireland Census, it is assumed that she died sometime before 1851.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Census: Abt 1851, Raphoe North, County Donegal, Province of Ulster, Ireland, United Kingdom

    Notes:

The 1841/1851 Irish Census Abstracts are not clear about the actual date of the census. For instance, the age listed for Margaret conflicts with her likely age at the time of her emmigration. However, this is the only record for a Daniel McGinley with a wife “Margaret” living in County Donegal. Additional research is required.

Whether or not Daniel McGinley was born before or after the adoption of the Acts of Union (1 January 1801) would determine if he was born in the Kingdom of Ireland or the United Kingdom. Given the dates of the birth of his children, the latter seems more likely.

Daniel + Margaret Logan. Margaret was born in ? in _______, _______, Ireland, United Kingdom; died after 1851 in (unknown). [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  4. 15.  Margaret Logan was born in ? in _______, _______, Ireland, United Kingdom; died after 1851 in (unknown).

    Other Events and Attributes:

Whether or not Margaret Logan was born before or after the adoption of the Acts of Union (1 January 1801) would determine if she was born in the Kingdom of Ireland or the United Kingdom. Given the dates of the birth of her children, the latter seems more likely.
