    Notes:

It is odd that the 1850 Federal Census for MA lists Edward as having been born in New Hampshire, like his elder brother Frederick, when a birth record for Chelsea, Massachusetts exists.

[Tutein-1997a] incorrectly states that Edward Gross Tutein died on 16 Jul 1905.

Sources [LDS-IGI-1982g] and [NEHGS-1905a] are in agreement regarding the date of Edward Gross Tutein’s birth.

Generation: 3

  1. 4.  Friedrich Johannes Tutein was born on 4 Dec 1798 in Copenhagen, Denmark (son of Johann Friederick Tutein and Maria Susannah van Beverhoudt); died in 1858 in _______, _______, Massachusetts, United States.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Also Known As: Frederick John Tutein
    • Occupation: Sea Captain, Stevedore
    • Immigration: 1 Sep 1826, Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, United States
    • Naturalization: Feb 1838, Court of Common Pleas, Portsmouth, Rockingham County, New Hampshire, United States
    • Census: Sep 1850, Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, United States

    Notes:

1873, widely reported in LDS sources as the year of Friedrich Tutein’s death, appears to be incorrect. 1858, on the other hand, reported in [Gross-1901a], is consistent with the fact that Friedrich Tutein’s wife Nancy, son Frederick J, and daughter Mary E were all living with his eldest son Constantine in 1860.

[Nolthenius-1998] has birth year as 1794.

Death place is inferred from the birth places of the four sons.

[NGS-1978] has name listed as “Fredrik Tutein”.

[Fairbanks-1949] incorrectly lists this person as “William Tutein” but notes that he was a Danish sea captain wrecked off the New England coast. This second assertion is consistent with the fact that no other Tuteins emigrated to the US before the 1900s. However [Graves-1901a] states that Friedrich Tutein was part of the crew.

[NGS,1978] incorrectly lists the month and year that Frederich Johannes Tutein immigrated as the date of his naturalization.

According to [US-INS-1838a], Friedrich Johannes Tutein was a resident of Somersworth, Strafford County, New Hampshire at the time of his naturalization. This is consistent with [Boston-1913], the obituary of his son Joseph A Tutein, that states that Joseph was, “…a native of Somersworth”.

Friedrich married Nancy Stacy on 14 Jul 1833 in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, United States. Nancy (daughter of Philemon Stacy and Polly Bray Edgily) was born on 27 Oct 1804 in Gloucester, Essex County, Massachusetts, United States; died on 2 Aug 1881 in Chelsea, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, United States. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 5.  Nancy Stacy was born on 27 Oct 1804 in Gloucester, Essex County, Massachusetts, United States (daughter of Philemon Stacy and Polly Bray Edgily); died on 2 Aug 1881 in Chelsea, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, United States.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Census: 11 Sep 1850, Ward 1, Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, United States
    • Census: 19 Jun 1855, Ward 1, Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, United States
    • Census: 16 Jul 1860, Chelsea, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, United States
    • Census: 7 Jul 1870, City of Chelsea, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, United States
    • Residence: Jun 1880, Chelsea, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, United States
    • Census: 23 Jun 1880, Chelsea, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, United States

    Notes:

It appears that Nancy Stacy married a John Campbell before her marriage Friedrich Johannes Tutein, as a son from that marriage, William Campbell, is living in the Tutein household in 1850 and 1855. This also explains why, when she married Friedrich Johannes Tutein she stated her name as “Nancy Campbell”, while most of her children referred to her in vital records as “Nancy Stacy”. It is not clear how the names “Nancy Gross Stacy”, [Tutein-1997a] or “Nancy Gross” [Nolthenius-1998] were derived, since the only reference to “Gross” is its use as her youngest son’s (by Friedrich) middle name.

Nancy (Stacy Campbell) Tutein was living with her eldest son Constantine in 1860, her daughter Mary E (Tutein) Butler in 1870, and her second eldest son, Joseph A Tutein in 1880. She did not, however, list herself as a widow until 1880.

[NEHGS-1881a] lists Nancy (Stacy) Tutein’s age at death as 76 years, 9 months, and 6 days. This places her birth on 27 Oct 1804. This date is confirmed by [Graves-1901a].

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Residence: 1809, Cristiansted, St. Croix, Danish West Indies

    Notes:

Maria Susannah van Beverhoudt’s race is listed as “mustice” in [VISAH-1809a]. This means that she was the child of one white and one mulatto parent. According to the classifications of the time, Maria would have been 3/4’s european/caucasian and 1/4 african/negro descent.

  3. 10.  Philemon Stacy was born on 22 Jul 1772 in _______, _______, Province of Massachusetts Bay (son of Philemon Stacy and Mary Rand); died on 30 Jun 1813 in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, United States; was buried on 3 Jul 1813 in South Burial Ground, Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, United States.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Baptism: 1 Nov 1772, Gloucester, Essex County, Province of Massachusetts Bay

    Notes:

[Graves-1901a] lists 13 June 1813 as Philemon Stacy’s death date. The source of this date is not known, but it conflicts with Massachusetts vital records as recorded in [Holbrook-1813a].

The “South Burial Ground” is probably a reference to the South End Burial Ground opened in 1810 which was known as the, “working man’s burial ground”.

Philemon married Polly Bray Edgily on 27 Nov 1796 in Gloucester, Essex County, Massachusetts, United States. Polly was born on 14 Mar 1772 in _______, _______, Province of Massachusetts Bay; died on 16 Feb 1845 in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, United States; was buried on 19 Feb 1845 in South Burial Ground, Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, United States. Other Events and Attributes:

    • Cause of Death: “Consumption” (tuberculosis)

    Notes:

Research suggests that this woman may have been Polly Hooper, who is recorded as having married James Edgily in 1789. This would account for the fact that some Massachusetts list Philemon Stacy’s wife as “Mrs. Polly Edgily”.

    Children:
    1. Abigail Bray Stacy was born on 8 May 1797 in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, United States; died on 9 Feb 1800 in _______, _______, Massachusetts, United States.
