Samuel Richard Fairbanks lists his wife and a single child in his Selective Service registration for World War I, but information gathered to date indicates that his eldest daughter, Mary, had not yet been born. Further research is required.

    Notes:

[Fairbanks-1978] has Robert Fairbanks’ birthplace as Coventry, England in 1869. [US-INS-1898a] has Robert’s birth in Warwickshire, England on 3 Sep 1867. However both of these conflict with [Sligo-1867]. In this database we use “3 Sep” on the presumption that Robert knew his own birth date and that 20 Sep 1867 (from the Irish civil registration records) is probably Robert’s christening date--actual birth dates being recorded only very rarely in England and Ireland at the time. For the birth location, we use Coolaney, County Sligo, Province of Connaught, Ireland--First, because it is the only actual birth record found for Robert that is consistent with his father’s occupation, his mother’s maiden name, and the birth locations of most of his siblings. Second, Englishmen born abroad frequently lied about the location in order to avoid discrimination. It should be noted that both Coventry and Warwickshire are consistent with where Richard and Euphemia (Thomson) Fairbanks where living when their eldest son John Edward was born in 1862.

Robert Fairbanks and Hannah Elizabeth Lowe appear to have been living with Hannah’s parents at the time of the 1900 US Federal Census.

Robert Fairbanks emigrated to the United States aboard the SS Pavonia bound for Boston from Queenstown, Ireland and Liverpool, England in Feb 1888.

Robert Fairbanks and his family were living on Saratoga Street in what is now the Boston borough of Chelsea when his daughter, Florence Martha, was born in 1895. This fact lends confidence to Robert’s naturalization record, as it lists his address on Saratoga Street only two years later.

    • Census: 22 Apr 1930, Precinct 2, Melrose City, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States

    Notes:

Despite all family evidence to the contrary, it appears that Hannah Elizabeth Lowe may have been christened “Elizabeth Lowe,” and was known by that name at various points in her life. First, [US-1880-1q] and [US-1870-2d2] list Hannah as “Elizabeth A. Lowe”. Second, on 4 Apr 1869, an Elizabeth Lowe, the daughter of Samuel and Mary Lowe, was christened at St. Mary’s Church, Manchester, Lancashire, England. Third, Hannah Elizabeth Lowe is listed twice, first as “Elizabeth H” and then again as “Lizzie” in the birth entry for her eldest son, Samuel.

Hannah Elizabeth Lowe and Robert Fairbanks appear to have been living with her parents at the time of the 1900 US Federal Census.

[US-1910-1m] indicates that Hannah Elizabeth Lowe may have emigrated to the United States in 1880 rather than 1869, as listed in [Fairbanks-1978].

    Notes:

[NEHGS-1893a] does not actually state that Robert Fairbanks and Hannah Elizabeth Lowe were married in Boston. But since they were both living in Boston at the time, the marriage was registered in Boston, and the officiating pastor was from Boston, they’re having been married in Boston seems very likely.

    Children:
    1. 2. Samuel Richard Fairbanks was born on 2 Dec 1893 in East Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, United States; died on 5 Sep 1972 in Readington, Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States.
    2. Florence Martha Fairbanks was born on 3 Nov 1895 in East Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, United States; died on 22 Mar 1987 in Scarborough, Cumberland County, Maine, United States.

    4. Robert Stanley Fairbanks was born on 28 Jan 1906 in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, United States; died on 23 Feb 1982 in Saint Louis, Missouri, United States; was buried on 26 Feb 1982 in Memorial Park Cemetery, Saint Louis, Missouri, United States.

Generation: 4

  1. 8.  Richard FairbanksRichard Fairbanks was born about 1837 in (unknown) (son of Edward Fairbanks and Eliza Mann); died on 29 Dec 1885 in Templehouse, County Sligo, Province of Connacht, Ireland, United Kingdom.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Residence: Nov 1860, Cambo Estate, Kingsbarns Parish, County Fife, Scotland, United Kingdom
    • Residence: Mar 1864, Kenilworth, Warwickshire, England, United Kingdom

    Notes:

[Fairbanks-1978] states that Richard Fairbanks was the ‘Chief Steward of the Temple family of Coventry’. This is probably a reference to Henry Lord Temple, 3rd Viscount Palmerston who was known to have estates in Scotland and Ireland, including Cassiebawn Castle and estate in northwestern County Sligo. However, most of Richard Fairbanks’ children were born in the area of Temple House Estate, the ancestral home of the Perceval family near Ballymote. In fact, two daughters, Beatrice and Margaret, are actually listed as being born at ‘Temple House’. Given these facts, it is more likely that Richard Fairbanks worked for the Perceval family in some capacity rather than for Lord Palmerston.

[Fairbanks-1949] lists Euphemia Thomson’s husband as “James Fairbanks,” born in Coventry, England but numerous birth records of their children and their marriage license contradict this. The name “James Richard Fairbanks” is, however, supported by one source, the death entry of their eldest son, John Edward Fairbanks.

[Fairbanks-1949] states Nancy Ruth Fairbanks’ great-grandfather died at the age of 56 (probably around 1893 based on his age at marriage.), but this conflicts with the date listed in [NAoI-1889].

[Fairbanks-1949] breaks down the emigration of the nine listed (of eleven known) children as follows:
    - A son (James or William?) emigrated to South Africa to work the diamond mines and was not heard from again after a few early contacts. (Neither proven nor disproven.)
    - A son and a daughter emigrated to Australia for the gold rush. (John Edward and an unknown sister possibly Margaret?)
    - Two daughters (probably references to Beatrice and Martha) accompanied their brother “Tom” (almost certainly Thomas) to Canada. (Although it has been proven that the two youngest sisters actually travelled alone to meet their older sister Euphemia’s family. Thomas emigrated to Canada later.)
    - Richard accompanied Robert to the United States. (Neither proven nor disproven.)
    - A son (James or William) joined the British Military and was killed in the Boer War in South Africa. (Neither proven nor disproven.)

Richard and Euphemia (Thomson) Fairbanks appear to be living in “Kingspark” in Warwickshire in 1862. His profession is listed as “Bailiff”.

Richard married Euphemia Thomson on 19 Nov 1860 in Kingsbarns, Kingsbarns Parish, County Fife, Scotland, United Kingdom. Euphemia (daughter of John Thomson and Margaret Kay) was born on 15 Nov 1840 in Kingsbarns, Kingsbarns Parish, County Fife, Scotland, United Kingdom; died about Sep 1908 in _______, County Sligo, Province of Connacht, Ireland, United Kingdom. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 9.  Euphemia ThomsonEuphemia Thomson was born on 15 Nov 1840 in Kingsbarns, Kingsbarns Parish, County Fife, Scotland, United Kingdom (daughter of John Thomson and Margaret Kay); died about Sep 1908 in _______, County Sligo, Province of Connacht, Ireland, United Kingdom.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Baptism: 29 Nov 1840, Kingsbarns, Kingsbarns Parish, County Fife, Scotland, United Kingdom
    • Census: 31 Mar 1851, Kingsbarns, Kingsbarns Parish, County Fife, Scotland, United Kingdom
    • Census: 8 Apr 1861, Kingsbarns, Kingsbarns Parish, County Fife, Scotland, United Kingdom
    • Residence: Mar 1864, Kenilworth, Warwickshire, England, United Kingdom
    • Residence: Mar 1901, Sligo, County Sligo, Province of Connacht, Ireland, United Kingdom
    • Census: 31 Mar 1901, Ward of West Sligo, Sligo, County Sligo, Province of Connacht, Ireland, United Kingdom

    Notes:

According to [Fairbanks-1949], Euphemia died at the age of 58 attended by two of her children (a son and a daughter) who then emigrated to Australia after their mother’s death--the other children having emigrated previously. However this is contradicted by [UK-GRO-1908a] and [LaAC-1913a]. The children that were living with Euphemia at the time of her death were probably Thomas and Martha, both of whom emigrated to Canada along with their sister Beatrice in 1913.

There are many individuals named “Euphemia Thomson” in the 1861 Scotland Census. However the individual listed in [Scotland-1861a] is named “Euphima Fairbanks”. Since this census was taken only 6 months after the marriage of Richard Fairbanks and Euphemia Thomson, it is plausible that she was enumerated with her family. Consequently, the connection to the family of John and Margaret Thomson is well supported.

[Fairbanks-1949] and [Fairbanks-1978] both have the name “Euphemia Thompson”, and this name is listed with the birth information for most of the children of Richard Fairbanks and Euphemia (Thomson) Fairbanks. However, “Thomson” is spelling used by Euphemia’s family.

A niece, “Ethel Fairbanks”, is living in Euphemia (Thomson) Fairbanks’ household in 1901. It is likely, but not yet proven, that this child is the daughter of one Richard Fairbanks’ siblings.

    Residence:
    1 Wolfe Tone Street

    Notes:

Richard Fairbanks and Euphemia Thomson were married at the “Manse of Kingsbarns”--in other words, at the minister’s home or residence.

The marriage of Richard Fairbanks and Euphemia Thomson was witnessed by Euphemia’s younger brothers Alexander and James.

    Notes:

In addition to his position at the Atlantic Works, Samuel was a machinist at T. A. Harrison’s Mill, Stalybridge, England and a Master Mechanic at the China Mill in Suncook, New Hampshire. It was the China Mill that sponsored the emigration of Samuel Lowe and his family to the United States.

Despite the usage in Fairbanks-1978], there is no indication that Samuel Lowe referred to himself with the suffix “Jr.”

The naturalization date and location listed in [Fairbanks-1978], “13 Oct 1882, Boston, Suffolk County” conflict with the US DoJ, INS records in source [US-INS-1880a]. Since the latter is the actual naturalization record from the US government, it is used in this database.

[US-1900-1c] confirms 1869 as the year that Samuel Lowe and his family emigrated from England to the United States.

[Fairbanks-1979] has death occurring in East Boston, Merrimack County, Massachusetts, but this conflicts with Samuel Lowe’s death certificate.

Samuel Lowe was admitted to Boston City Hospital (the old city hospital in Boston’s South End) on 4 February 1905 and died there the next day.

In the 1870 US Federal Census, Samuel Lowe was enumerated under the name “Law”.

Maria Chadwick, along with her sister and mother, are enumerated in her grandfather’s household in 1861 UK census.

Maria (Chadwick) Lowe was living in a boarding house run by a ‘Thomas Grisdale’ in 1870. William Lowe, Maria’s brother-in-law, was also living in the same boarding house in East Boson.

Maria (Chadwick) Lowe, along with her daughters Hannah Elizabeth (“Lizzie”) and Emily, and accompanied by her brother-in-law William, returned from a sea voyage to England on 13 Sep 1890 aboard the Cephalonia.

[US-1900-1c] confirms 1869 as the year that Maria (Chadwick) Lowe and her family emigrated from England to the United States.

In the 1870 US Federal Census, Maria (Chadwick) Lowe was enumerated under the name “Law”.

[LDS-VRI-1847c] lists 9 Jun 1846 as the date of Maria Chadwick’s birth. This conflicts with 9 Oct 1846 listed in [Fairbanks-1978].
