1. | Robert Paul Herndon was born on 9 Oct 1909 in Durant, Bryan County, Oklahoma, United States (son of Robert Boyd Herndon and Tennie May Calhoun); died on 12 Dec 1992 in West Memphis, Crittenden County, Arkansas, United States; was buried on 15 Dec 1992 in Dogwood Cemetery, near Blytheville, Mississippi County, Arkansas, United States. Other Events and Attributes:
Notes: Robert Paul Herndon abandoned his first wife and sons late in 1936 or early in 1937. Family rumors indicate that he attended Elizabeth Marina Masten’s funeral, but since he was incarcerated in Ft. Worth, Tarrant County, Texas in 1937, this seems unlikely. From late in 1941 through 1956, he was incarcerated in California, and [Cobb-1992] indicates that he was a resident of West Memphis from 1986 through his death in 1992. Robert married Elizabeth Marina Masten on 13 Apr 1932 in Las Cruces, Doña Ana County, New Mexico, United States. Elizabeth (daughter of Merlin Douglas Masten and Lois Miranda Stiles) was born on 5 Feb 1915 in Mimbres, Grant County, New Mexico, United States; died on 20 Sep 1937 in El Paso, El Paso County, Texas, United States; was buried on 21 Sep 1937 in Restlawn Memorial Park, El Paso, El Paso County, Texas, United States. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart] Notes: A ‘Mrs. H. Mabry’ (Tennie (Calhoun-Herndon) Mabry) witnessed the marriage of Robert Paul Herndon to Elizabeth Marina Masten in New Mexico in 1932.Children:
Robert married Lois J Bidwell after 24 Feb 1956. Lois was born on 1 Jun 1922 in Luxora, Mississippi County, Arkansas, United States; died on 28 Dec 2021 in West Memphis, Crittenden County, Arkansas, United States; was buried after 28 Dec 2021 in Dogwood Cemetery, near Blytheville, Mississippi County, Arkansas, United States. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart] Notes: The date of Robert Paul Herndon’s marriage to Lois J Bidwell is not known, but it could not have been before 24 February 1956 when Robert was released on parole from the California Institute for Men at Chino. |
2. | Robert Boyd Herndon was born on 22 Jun 1886 in Chicota, Lamar County, Texas, United States (son of George Wallace Herndon and Mary Emma Draper); died on 9 Mar 1934 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma County, Oklahoma, United States; was buried on 10 Mar 1934 in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Hugo, Choctaw County, Oklahoma, United States. Other Events and Attributes:
Notes: Sometime between 1917 and 1920, Robert Boyd Herndon and Tennie May Calhoun separated, as he is living alone in Wichita Falls, Wichita County, Texas in 1920. By 1930, he is living in Tulsa, Tulsa County, Oklahoma. [US-1930-1i] has two entries for Robert. In the first he lists himself as “single”. In the second his is listed as “widowed”. The location of Tennie and of Robert Boyd’s sons, Robert Paul Herndon and William Pryor Herndon, in 1920 has not yet been established. Although it is known that the boys were not living with any of their immediate Herndon relatives in 1920. Robert married Tennie May Calhoun on 12 Dec 1908 in Durant, Bryan County, Oklahoma, United States. Tennie (daughter of James Marion Calhoun and Sarah Elizabeth Turpin) was born on 1 May 1891 in Sherman, Grayson County, Texas, United States; died on 7 Nov 1977 in Port Hueneme, Ventura County, California, United States; was buried after 7 Nov 1977 in (unknown). [Group Sheet] [Family Chart] |
3. | Tennie May Calhoun was born on 1 May 1891 in Sherman, Grayson County, Texas, United States (daughter of James Marion Calhoun and Sarah Elizabeth Turpin); died on 7 Nov 1977 in Port Hueneme, Ventura County, California, United States; was buried after 7 Nov 1977 in (unknown). Other Events and Attributes:
Notes: A ‘Mrs. H. Mabry’ witnessed the marriage of Robert Paul Herndon to Elizabeth Marina Masten in New Mexico in 1932. Notes: Tennie’s parents, James Marion Calhoun and Sarah Elizabeth (Turpin) Calhoun, served as witnesses for the marriage license application and marriage certificate.

4. | George Wallace Herndon was born on 20 Jun 1850 in Kings Mountain, Cleveland County, North Carolina, United States (son of William Herndon and Delina Langford); died on 4 Oct 1911 in Hugo, Choctaw County, Oklahoma, United States; was buried after 4 Oct 1911 in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Hugo, Choctaw County, Oklahoma, United States. Other Events and Attributes:
Notes: George Wallace Herndon was enumerated with his mother and brothers in Precinct No. 1, Lamar County, Texas in 1880. The whereabouts of his wife, Mary Emma (Draper) Herndon and his two eldest sons Justin Alonzo Herndon and William Draper Herndon are not known. George married Mary Emma Draper on 23 Dec 1875 in Chicota, Lamar County, Texas, United States. Mary (daughter of Robert Wilkins Draper and Susan Elliott Littlejohn) was born on 8 Jan 1857 in _______, Calhoun County, Alabama, United States; died on 6 Feb 1937 in El Paso, El Paso County, Texas, United States; was buried on 9 Feb 1937 in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Hugo, Choctaw County, Oklahoma, United States. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart] |
5. | Mary Emma Draper was born on 8 Jan 1857 in _______, Calhoun County, Alabama, United States (daughter of Robert Wilkins Draper and Susan Elliott Littlejohn); died on 6 Feb 1937 in El Paso, El Paso County, Texas, United States; was buried on 9 Feb 1937 in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Hugo, Choctaw County, Oklahoma, United States. Other Events and Attributes:
Notes: Mary Emma Draper was living in the home of her daughter Justina and son-in-law Edward A Dunne at the time of her death in 1937. This is corroborated by sources [Hugo-1934] and [Hugo-1937]. Notes: [Anderson-1964] incorrectly lists 22 Dec 1875 as the date of George Wallace Herndon’s marriage to Mary Emma Draper.

6. | James Marion Calhoun was born on 28 Jan 1843 in _______, Adair County, Kentucky, United States (son of James T Calhoun and Elizabeth Calhoun); died on 1 Feb 1915 in (unknown); was buried after 1 Feb 1915 in Highland Cemetery, Durant, Bryan County, Oklahoma, United States. Other Events and Attributes:
Notes: There are at least 2 “James M” or “James N” Calhouns, born in 1842/43 living in or around Adair and Wayne counties in Kentucky in 1850 - 1870. The first, James M Calhoun son of Andrew John (A J) and Catherine Calhoun, is initially noted in the 1850 US Federal Census for Wayne County. But this James Calhoun is also noted as still living with his parents in the 1870 census. By 1870, our James Marion Calhoun was already married to Sarah Elizabeth Turpin, and is referenced in [US-1870-1d]. Moreover, our James M Calhoun lists his birth place as Adair County, Kentucky. So I believe that our James Calhoun is the son of James T and Elizabeth Calhoun who were living in the 2nd District, Adair County in both 1850 and 1860. James married Sarah Elizabeth Turpin about 1868 in _______, _______, Kentucky, United States. Sarah (daughter of James Turpin and Martha Ann Turpin) was born on 1 Mar 1850 in _______, _______, Kentucky, United States; died on 28 Jul 1930 in (unknown); was buried after 28 Jul 1930 in Highland Cemetery, Durant, Bryan County, Oklahoma, United States. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart] |
7. | Sarah Elizabeth Turpin was born on 1 Mar 1850 in _______, _______, Kentucky, United States (daughter of James Turpin and Martha Ann Turpin); died on 28 Jul 1930 in (unknown); was buried after 28 Jul 1930 in Highland Cemetery, Durant, Bryan County, Oklahoma, United States. Other Events and Attributes:
Notes: [Grayson,1942a] has Sarah Elizabeth Turpin being born in Adair County, Kentucky in 1850, but considering the Turpin family’s presence in Wayne County 1850, this is extremely unlikely. It is more likely that Rebecca (Bradley) Calhoun, the filer of Tennie May Calhoun’s probate birth certificate, didn’t know the birth places of her sister-in-law’s parents and simply listed Adair County, the last location in Kentucky where they where know to have lived. LDS IGI records, on the other hand, have a listing for a “Sarah E Turpin,” born to James and Martha in Wayne County, in 1849.

8. | William Herndon was born on 23 Mar 1808 in _______, Charlotte County, Virginia, United States (son of John Herndon and Elizabeth Mealer); died on 19 Apr 1877 in _______, Cleveland County, North Carolina, United States; was buried after 19 Apr 1877 in Bethlehem Baptist Cemetery, Kings Mountain, Cleveland County, North Carolina, United States. Other Events and Attributes:
Notes: Numerous references have Delina Langford’s husband listed as “William Henry Herndon”, but the only vital record with such a reference discovered thus far is [TxDoSHS-1948a], the death certificate of William Herndon’s youngest son James Augustus. A few sources have the name “William Wallace Herndon”. However, there is no clear evidence that either of these is correct. William married Delina Langford on 27 Sep 1849 in _______, _______, South Carolina, United States. Delina (daughter of George Perry Langford and Mary Collins) was born in Mar 1828 in _______, Cleveland County, North Carolina, United States; died on 7 Jul 1922 in Kirbyville, Jasper County, Texas, United States. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart] |
9. | Delina Langford was born in Mar 1828 in _______, Cleveland County, North Carolina, United States (daughter of George Perry Langford and Mary Collins); died on 7 Jul 1922 in Kirbyville, Jasper County, Texas, United States. Other Events and Attributes:
Notes: [Herndon-1950a] as well as the LDS Church Ancestral File refer to William Herndon’s wife as “Dalena Lankford”, but this fact has no substantiating evidence. Langford family records, though, list a daughter of George Perry Langford named “Delina” who married William Herndon.

10. | Robert Wilkins Draper was born on 27 Apr 1820 in Spartanburg, Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States (son of Joshua Draper and Nancy Wilkins); died on 8 Jan 1894 in Chicota, Lamar County, Texas, United States; was buried after 8 Jan 1894 in Littlejohn Cemetery, near Chicota, Lamar County, Texas, United States. Other Events and Attributes:
Notes: Robert Wilkins Draper moved to Alabama in 1845 shortly after his marriage to Susan Elliott Littlejohn. After the birth of all of his children save Sarah Elizabeth (his eldest) and Daniel Napoleon (his youngest), the family moved to Texes, on 18 Sep 1865. Robert married Susan Elliott Littlejohn on 21 Jan 1844 in Spartanburg, Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. Susan (daughter of William Littlejohn and Elizabeth Lipscomb) was born on 26 May 1826 in Spartanburg, Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States; died on 15 Nov 1867 in Chicota, Lamar County, Texas, United States; was buried after 15 Nov 1867 in Littlejohn Cemetery, near Chicota, Lamar County, Texas, United States. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart] |
11. | Susan Elliott Littlejohn was born on 26 May 1826 in Spartanburg, Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States (daughter of William Littlejohn and Elizabeth Lipscomb); died on 15 Nov 1867 in Chicota, Lamar County, Texas, United States; was buried after 15 Nov 1867 in Littlejohn Cemetery, near Chicota, Lamar County, Texas, United States. Other Events and Attributes:
Notes: A woman who appears to be a 54 year old Susan Elliott (Littlejohn) Draper appears in [US-1880-1u] as the wife of Robert Wilkins Draper--despite the fact that both [Anderson-1964] and [Chicota-2002] support a death date of 15 Nov 1867. The latter is particularly convincing as it is “Susan E Littlejohn’s” cemetery monument. For the moment, this database assumes that the census record is incorrect, but a 1870 census record for Lamar County, Texas is needed.
