4. | Robert Paul Herndon was born on 9 Oct 1909 in Durant, Bryan County, Oklahoma, United States (son of Robert Boyd Herndon and Tennie May Calhoun); died on 12 Dec 1992 in West Memphis, Crittenden County, Arkansas, United States; was buried on 15 Dec 1992 in Dogwood Cemetery, near Blytheville, Mississippi County, Arkansas, United States. Other Events and Attributes:
Notes: Robert Paul Herndon abandoned his first wife and sons late in 1936 or early in 1937. Family rumors indicate that he attended Elizabeth Marina Masten’s funeral, but since he was incarcerated in Ft. Worth, Tarrant County, Texas in 1937, this seems unlikely. From late in 1941 through 1956, he was incarcerated in California, and [Cobb-1992] indicates that he was a resident of West Memphis from 1986 through his death in 1992. Robert married Elizabeth Marina Masten on 13 Apr 1932 in Las Cruces, Doña Ana County, New Mexico, United States. Elizabeth (daughter of Merlin Douglas Masten and Lois Miranda Stiles) was born on 5 Feb 1915 in Mimbres, Grant County, New Mexico, United States; died on 20 Sep 1937 in El Paso, El Paso County, Texas, United States; was buried on 21 Sep 1937 in Restlawn Memorial Park, El Paso, El Paso County, Texas, United States. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart] |
5. | Elizabeth Marina Masten was born on 5 Feb 1915 in Mimbres, Grant County, New Mexico, United States (daughter of Merlin Douglas Masten and Lois Miranda Stiles); died on 20 Sep 1937 in El Paso, El Paso County, Texas, United States; was buried on 21 Sep 1937 in Restlawn Memorial Park, El Paso, El Paso County, Texas, United States. Other Events and Attributes:
Notes: [DonaAna-1932] has Elizabeth Masten claiming her birth date is 5 February 1914 which would have made her 18 at the time of the wedding. But, since it appears that the marriage was conducting without the permission of her mother, Lois Miranda (Stiles) Masten, Elizabeth probably lied on the certificate. Notes: A ‘Mrs. H. Mabry’ (Tennie (Calhoun-Herndon) Mabry) witnessed the marriage of Robert Paul Herndon to Elizabeth Marina Masten in New Mexico in 1932.

6. | Robert Stanley Fairbanks was born on 28 Jan 1906 in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, United States (son of Robert Fairbanks and Hannah Elizabeth Lowe); died on 23 Feb 1982 in Saint Louis, Missouri, United States; was buried on 26 Feb 1982 in Memorial Park Cemetery, Saint Louis, Missouri, United States. Other Events and Attributes:
Notes: Residence: Robert married Ruth Edna Tutein on 20 Jul 1933 in Saint Louis, Missouri, United States. Ruth (daughter of William Franklin Tutein and Harriet Cole Eastman) was born on 25 Sep 1907 in Lynn, Essex County, Massachusetts, United States; died on 12 Oct 1998 in O’Fallon, St. Charles County, Missouri, United States; was buried on 14 Oct 1998 in Memorial Park Cemetery, Saint Louis, Missouri, United States. 8. | Robert Boyd Herndon was born on 22 Jun 1886 in Chicota, Lamar County, Texas, United States (son of George Wallace Herndon and Mary Emma Draper); died on 9 Mar 1934 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma County, Oklahoma, United States; was buried on 10 Mar 1934 in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Hugo, Choctaw County, Oklahoma, United States. Other Events and Attributes:
Notes: Sometime between 1917 and 1920, Robert Boyd Herndon and Tennie May Calhoun separated, as he is living alone in Wichita Falls, Wichita County, Texas in 1920. By 1930, he is living in Tulsa, Tulsa County, Oklahoma. [US-1930-1i] has two entries for Robert. In the first he lists himself as “single”. In the second his is listed as “widowed”. The location of Tennie and of Robert Boyd’s sons, Robert Paul Herndon and William Pryor Herndon, in 1920 has not yet been established. Although it is known that the boys were not living with any of their immediate Herndon relatives in 1920. Robert married Tennie May Calhoun on 12 Dec 1908 in Durant, Bryan County, Oklahoma, United States. Tennie (daughter of James Marion Calhoun and Sarah Elizabeth Turpin) was born on 1 May 1891 in Sherman, Grayson County, Texas, United States; died on 7 Nov 1977 in Port Hueneme, Ventura County, California, United States; was buried after 7 Nov 1977 in (unknown). [Group Sheet] [Family Chart] |
9. | Tennie May Calhoun was born on 1 May 1891 in Sherman, Grayson County, Texas, United States (daughter of James Marion Calhoun and Sarah Elizabeth Turpin); died on 7 Nov 1977 in Port Hueneme, Ventura County, California, United States; was buried after 7 Nov 1977 in (unknown). Other Events and Attributes:
Notes: A ‘Mrs. H. Mabry’ witnessed the marriage of Robert Paul Herndon to Elizabeth Marina Masten in New Mexico in 1932. Notes: Tennie’s parents, James Marion Calhoun and Sarah Elizabeth (Turpin) Calhoun, served as witnesses for the marriage license application and marriage certificate.

10. | Merlin Douglas Masten was born on 21 Dec 1887 in Boque Chitto, Lincoln County, Mississippi, United States (son of Horace Greely Masten and Alice Frances Stone); died on 5 Mar 1962 in Bellingham, Whatcom County, Washington, United States; was buried on 12 Mar 1962 in Woodlawn Cemetery, near Ferndale, Whatcom County, Washington, United States. Other Events and Attributes:
Notes: Source [US-SSS-1917b] has Merlin Douglas Masten’s birthdate as 21 Dec 1887. [Whatcom-1962], Merlin’s death certificate, has his age correct but lists a birthdate off by exactly one decade, 21 Dec 1877. [US-1900-1e] and [Masten-1900] also support the date in 1887, listing Merlin as having been born in 1888. Only [US-SSA-1941a], Merlin’s original Social Security application, lists his birthdate as 21 Dec 1886. Merlin married Lois Miranda Stiles on 27 Dec 1911 in _______, Williamson County, Texas, United States, and was divorced after 17 Aug 1927 in El Paso, El Paso County, Texas, United States. Lois (daughter of Francis Newton Stiles and Marina Floyd Thomas) was born on 4 Mar 1885 in Thrall, Williamson County, Texas, United States; died on 19 May 1975 in El Paso, El Paso County, Texas, United States; was buried on 22 May 1975 in Restlawn Memorial Park, El Paso, El Paso County, Texas, United States. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart] |
11. | Lois Miranda Stiles was born on 4 Mar 1885 in Thrall, Williamson County, Texas, United States (daughter of Francis Newton Stiles and Marina Floyd Thomas); died on 19 May 1975 in El Paso, El Paso County, Texas, United States; was buried on 22 May 1975 in Restlawn Memorial Park, El Paso, El Paso County, Texas, United States. Other Events and Attributes:
Notes: Lois Miranda Stiles adopted her grandsons, William Cecil Herndon and Robert Frank Herndon, in 1941, about four years after the death of her daughter Elizabeth Marina in 1937. She officially changed Robert’s name to “Donald Stiles Herndon” but did not change William’s name. Notes: 17 Aug 1927 is the date that the divorce petition was recorded in the El Paso Herald. Presumably Lois Miranda (Stiles) Masten’s divorce from Merlin was granted sometime afterwards.

12. | Robert Fairbanks was born on 3 Sep 1867 in Coolaney, County Sligo, Province of Connacht, Ireland, United Kingdom; was christened on 20 Sep 1867 in Coolaney, County Sligo, Province of Connacht, Ireland, United Kingdom (son of Richard Fairbanks and Euphemia Thomson); died on 18 Dec 1931 in Melrose, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States; was buried after 18 Dec 1931 in Edson Cemetery, Lowell, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. Other Events and Attributes:
Notes: [Fairbanks-1978] has Robert Fairbanks’ birthplace as Coventry, England in 1869. [US-INS-1898a] has Robert’s birth in Warwickshire, England on 3 Sep 1867. However both of these conflict with [Sligo-1867]. In this database we use “3 Sep” on the presumption that Robert knew his own birth date and that 20 Sep 1867 (from the Irish civil registration records) is probably Robert’s christening date--actual birth dates being recorded only very rarely in England and Ireland at the time. For the birth location, we use Coolaney, County Sligo, Province of Connaught, Ireland--First, because it is the only actual birth record found for Robert that is consistent with his father’s occupation, his mother’s maiden name, and the birth locations of most of his siblings. Second, Englishmen born abroad frequently lied about the location in order to avoid discrimination. It should be noted that both Coventry and Warwickshire are consistent with where Richard and Euphemia (Thomson) Fairbanks where living when their eldest son John Edward was born in 1862. Robert married Hannah Elizabeth Lowe on 2 Feb 1893 in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, United States. Hannah (daughter of Samuel Lowe and Maria Chadwick) was born on 9 Apr 1869 in _______, _______, England, United Kingdom; died on 25 Nov 1943 in Melrose, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States; was buried after 25 Nov 1943 in Edson Cemetery, Lowell, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart] |
13. | Hannah Elizabeth Lowe was born on 9 Apr 1869 in _______, _______, England, United Kingdom (daughter of Samuel Lowe and Maria Chadwick); died on 25 Nov 1943 in Melrose, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States; was buried after 25 Nov 1943 in Edson Cemetery, Lowell, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. Other Events and Attributes:
Notes: Despite all family evidence to the contrary, it appears that Hannah Elizabeth Lowe may have been christened “Elizabeth Lowe,” and was known by that name at various points in her life. First, [US-1880-1q] and [US-1870-2d2] list Hannah as “Elizabeth A. Lowe”. Second, on 4 Apr 1869, an Elizabeth Lowe, the daughter of Samuel and Mary Lowe, was christened at St. Mary’s Church, Manchester, Lancashire, England. Third, Hannah Elizabeth Lowe is listed twice, first as “Elizabeth H” and then again as “Lizzie” in the birth entry for her eldest son, Samuel. Notes: [NEHGS-1893a] does not actually state that Robert Fairbanks and Hannah Elizabeth Lowe were married in Boston. But since they were both living in Boston at the time, the marriage was registered in Boston, and the officiating pastor was from Boston, they’re having been married in Boston seems very likely.

14. | William Franklin Tutein was born on 29 Jan 1862 in Chelsea, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, United States (son of Constantine Dedriech Tutein and Louisa Sawyer); died on 1 Apr 1937 in Stoneham, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States; was buried on 3 Apr 1937 in Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. Other Events and Attributes:
Notes: At the time the 1880 US Federal Census was recorded, William Franklin Tutein was still single. William married Harriet Cole Eastman on 30 Mar 1881 in Chelsea, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, United States. Harriet (daughter of Warren Eastman and Rachel Young Cole) was born on 26 Jun 1861 in Chelsea, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, United States; died on 31 Aug 1960 in Newport Center, Orleans County, Vermont, United States; was buried on 3 Sep 1960 in Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart] |
15. | Harriet Cole Eastman was born on 26 Jun 1861 in Chelsea, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, United States (daughter of Warren Eastman and Rachel Young Cole); died on 31 Aug 1960 in Newport Center, Orleans County, Vermont, United States; was buried on 3 Sep 1960 in Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. Other Events and Attributes:
Notes: Harriet Cole Eastman’s birthdate and birth location are corroborated by many sources including [Tutein-1997c], [VtSAaRA-1960a], [OakGrove-1960], and [NEHGS-1861a]. Notes: [NEHGS-1881e] does not actually state that William Franklin Tutein and Harriet Cole Eastman were at Chelsea, Suffolk County, but since both were living in Chelsea at the time and the Justice of the Peace who officiated was also from Chelsea, it is a reasonable assumption.
